What "Reconditioned" and "Rebuilt" Actually Mean
In the UK BMW specialist community, these terms are often used interchangeably. But there is a genuine distinction in workshop practice that affects what you're paying for and what you can expect.
Reconditioned (or "Recon")
A reconditioned engine has typically been stripped down either partially or fully, cleaned, and had some damaged components replaced. The key point: a reconditioned engine may not be returned to full factory specification — it is made serviceable rather than as-new. The standard is "operational" rather than "factory specification."
Rebuilt
A rebuilt engine generally implies a more thorough process: full disassembly to bare block and cylinder head, inspection of all components, and replacement of all wear items as standard practice. In a professional workshop, a rebuild includes new bearings, rings, gaskets, and seals, plus machining work to restore mating surfaces.
How the Terms Are Used in Practice
In reality, the terms overlap significantly. A "reconditioned" engine from one workshop might be as comprehensive as a "rebuilt" engine from another. The critical factor is not the label but the documented process — what was replaced, what was machined, and what standards were applied.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a rebuilt and a reconditioned engine?+
In professional workshop practice, a rebuilt engine typically means full disassembly to bare block and cylinder head, with all wear items (bearings, rings, gaskets, seals) replaced as standard and machining work performed. A reconditioned engine may involve partial disassembly only, with some components cleaned and re-used rather than replaced, and is made serviceable rather than as-new. In practice, the terms are used loosely and can overlap significantly.
How much does a BMW engine rebuild cost?+
Our rebuilds start from £1,900 for a 4-cylinder diesel, £2,200 for a 4-cylinder petrol, £2,800 for a 6-cylinder diesel, £3,200 for a 6-cylinder petrol, £4,500 for a V8, and £5,500+ for M-Performance engines. Your final quote depends on the exact engine, condition, and any additional components that need replacement.
Do you rebuild BMW M engines?+
Yes. We rebuild all M-Performance engines including the S54, S55, S58, S62, S63, S65, and S85. M-engine rebuilds start from £5,500. The process is the same full stripdown and rebuild, but with performance-specific components and tolerances.
How long does a BMW engine rebuild take?+
Our standard rebuild turnaround is 3–5 days, depending on the engine type and parts availability. This excludes inspection and diagnostic time if we need to assess a non-running engine first.
What warranty do you offer on a rebuild?+
Every rebuild comes with a 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty. This covers all parts and labour for the duration of the warranty period.
