What This Service Involves
Engine removal and refit (R&R) is the process of taking an engine out of a vehicle and later reinstalling it – either the same rebuilt unit or a replacement. Every engine that leaves our workshop undergoes a thorough removal, refit and testing process.
Removal Process
- Preparation: Battery disconnected, fluids drained (oil, coolant, fuel system depressurised).
- Ancillary removal: Intake and exhaust manifolds removed, wiring harnesses disconnected, ancillary components cleared.
- Engine support: Engine supported with a hoist.
- Mounts undone: Engine mounts unbolted.
- Subframe considerations: On some BMW models, the subframe and engine are removed together.
- Engine extraction: Engine carefully lifted and removed from the vehicle.
Refit Process
- Engine preparation: Rebuilt or replacement engine prepared with ancillaries fitted.
- Installation: Engine lowered into position.
- Mounts secured: Engine mounts torqued to specification.
- Ancillary reconnection: All components reconnected in reverse order.
- Fluids refilled: Oil, coolant, and other fluids replaced.
- System checks: Leak checks, electrical checks, fluid level verification.
Final Testing
After refit, the engine undergoes:
- Start-up testing: Engine started and run to check for leaks, noises, and correct operation.
- Running-in procedure: If rebuilt, the engine is run through a break-in protocol.
- Road test: Vehicle road-tested to verify performance and drivability.
- Final inspection: All systems checked before handover.

For engines with particularly demanding removal procedures – such as the N63 and S63 V8s, or N57 diesel units – we have the specialist tooling and experience to handle them safely.
Specific variants we frequently remove and refit include:
We also handle X-drive (AWD) models, which require front axle disconnection – a step we include in every quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does engine removal and refit take?+
Typically 3–5 days for removal, rebuild (if required) and refit, plus testing. For a straight removal/refit without rebuild, we can often complete it in 2–3 days. We'll give you a clear timeframe when we quote.
Do you remove the subframe on every BMW?+
No – it depends on the model. Many BMWs (especially 3 Series and X-drive cars) require subframe removal for engine access. Others allow the engine to be lifted out without subframe removal. We always follow the manufacturer's recommended procedure.
Is removal and refit included in the rebuild price?+
Yes – every engine rebuild we carry out includes full removal, refit, and final testing. The prices listed in Section 3 cover the complete job.
What kind of testing do you do after refit?+
We run a start-up test to check for leaks and noises, follow a running-in protocol for rebuilt engines, then road test the vehicle to verify performance, gearbox integration, and overall drivability. A final inspection covers all fluid levels and electrical systems.
Do you work on X-drive (AWD) BMWs?+
Absolutely – we regularly handle X-drive models. The front axle must be disconnected during engine removal, which we factor into every quote. We have the specialist tools to do this safely and correctly.
