What BMW Engine Bearing Replacement Involves
Our bearing replacement service is performed as a core part of our full engine rebuilds, and can also be carried out as a standalone procedure where required. The process involves:
- Engine preparation – we prepare the engine for bottom-end access, typically by removing the oil pan and any auxiliary components.
- Access to bearings – for main bearings, the crankshaft or main bearing caps are removed; for rod bearings, the connecting rod caps are accessed through the oil pan.
- Removal of old bearings – old bearing shells are carefully extracted from their housings.
- Journal inspection and measurement – crankshaft journals are inspected for wear, then measured against BMW's factory tolerance specifications using micrometres and bore gauges.
- Installation of new bearings – new bearings are fitted with the correct clearance, verified using plastigauge or precision micrometer readings.
- Reassembly and torque – all components are reassembled and torqued to BMW's exact specifications.
- Oil system service – the oil and filter are replaced to complete the process.
This work is carried out in our fully equipped workshop using specialist tools and genuine or OEM-grade replacement parts.
