What Cylinder Head Repair & Rebuild Involves
Our cylinder head service is a complete overhaul of the top end of your BMW engine. We follow a precise process to restore sealing, compression, and valve timing to factory standards.
- Head removal – the cylinder head is carefully lifted from the engine block.
- Full strip-down – all components (valves, springs, retainers, camshafts) are disassembled.
- Inspection and measurement – the head is checked for warpage, cracks, and wear; valve guides and seats are measured with precision tools.
- Machining (skimming) – the head is resurfaced to ensure a perfectly flat sealing surface.
- Valve work – valves are ground or replaced, new stem seals fitted, and seats recut or replaced.
- Reassembly with new gaskets and seals – including head gasket, camshaft seals, and all necessary O-rings.
- VANOS service – on engines equipped with BMW's variable valve timing, the VANOS unit is serviced during head work to maintain optimal performance.
All work is carried out in our Essex workshop using specialist equipment and genuine or OEM-quality parts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a BMW cylinder head rebuild include?+
It includes removal, full strip-down, inspection, head resurfacing (skimming), valve grinding or replacement, new valve stem seals, seat recutting, VANOS service (where applicable), reassembly with new gaskets and seals, and final testing.
How long does cylinder head repair take?+
Typical turnaround is 3–5 working days, depending on the extent of machining required and parts availability. We will give you a clear timeline when you bring your vehicle in.
Do you service VANOS during the head rebuild?+
Yes, for all BMW engines with VANOS (most modern models), we service the unit as part of the cylinder head overhaul to ensure correct variable valve timing and engine performance.
