What a BMW Engine Inspection & Assessment Involves

An engine inspection and assessment is the process we follow to determine the condition of your BMW engine and what work is required. This is not a diagnostic process focused on failure symptoms — it is the physical inspection that happens after a problem has been identified.

We assess the engine thoroughly, from initial visual checks through to full strip-down and component measurement. The outcome is a detailed scope of work and a quotation based on what your engine actually needs.

Because BMW engines vary significantly across models and generations, our assessment process is adapted to each specific engine type — whether it's a 4-cylinder diesel with a rear-mounted timing chain or a high-performance S58 from an M3.

BMW Engine Inspection & Assessment

Which BMW Models & Engines We Assess

Our inspection and assessment process covers the full BMW range — from 1 Series to X7, including M-cars. We assess the engine in its specific vehicle application, not just by engine code alone.

Key variants we regularly assess include:

We also assess M2, M6, 8 Series and all X3 M / X4 M models.

Our BMW Engine Assessment Process

  1. 01

    Initial Visual Inspection

The engine bay is inspected for leaks, damaged components, missing parts or physical damage.

  2. 02

    Fluid Assessment

Oil, coolant and other fluids are checked for contamination, levels and condition.

  3. 03

    Component Inspection

Belts, hoses, wiring and sensors are examined for condition and wear.

  4. 04

    Engine Removal (if required)

For a full assessment, the engine is removed from the vehicle and mounted on a stand.

  5. 05

    Strip-Down

The engine is systematically disassembled — cylinder head removed, sump dropped, internals exposed.

  6. 06

    Component-by-Component Inspection

Each component is inspected for wear and condition. Critical measurements are taken: bore wear, crankshaft journal condition, bearing wear, valve guide wear.

  7. 07

    Machinability Assessment

Components are assessed to determine whether they can be machined back to specification or must be replaced.

  8. 08

    Quotation

A detailed scope of work and quotation is prepared based on the inspection findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a BMW engine inspection take?+

An initial bay inspection takes 1–2 hours. A full engine-out strip-down assessment typically takes 1–2 days, depending on engine complexity and access.

How much does an engine assessment cost?+

Our standard inspection and assessment starts from £250 + VAT. This includes strip-down, component inspection and a detailed quotation. Engine removal and refit are quoted separately where required.

Do you assess M-car engines (S55, S58, S63)?+

Yes. We regularly assess S55 (M2 Competition / M3 / M4), S58 (X3 M / X4 M / G80 M3) and S63 (M5 / M6 / M8) engines. These require specific procedures, which we have in-house.

What if you find more damage during the assessment?+

We quote the work based on what we find. If additional issues are discovered during strip-down, we pause, call you with the updated findings, and agree a revised scope before proceeding.

Do you assess BMW diesel engines with timing chain issues?+

Yes. We assess N47, B47 and N57 diesel engines — including the rear-mounted timing chain systems found in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, X1, X3 and X5 models.
