What our engine failure repair involves
When a BMW engine fails, the first priority is a thorough assessment to understand exactly what has happened and what can be saved. Our workshop uses dealer-level BMW diagnostic equipment (ISTA) alongside experienced technician inspection to build a complete picture of the failure.
1. Diagnostic evaluation
Every failed engine that arrives at our workshop undergoes a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. We read fault codes, check sensor readings, and perform compression and leak-down tests to establish the engine's baseline condition.
2. Visual inspection
The engine is visually inspected for obvious signs of failure — external leaks, damaged components, or evidence of overheating or oil starvation.
3. Strip-down inspection
Where the cause of failure is not immediately clear, we perform a full strip-down inspection. The engine is carefully dismantled, and every component — from bearings and bolts to pistons, crankshaft and cylinder head — is inspected for wear, damage or failure.
4. Component measurement & logging
Every bolt, bearing and seal is measured against BMW tolerances. Faulty parts are logged, and a complete inventory of salvageable versus replacement components is created.
5. Bespoke quotation
Based on the strip-down findings, we prepare a detailed, fixed-price quote for the repair. No guesswork. No hidden extras. You see exactly what needs to be done and what it will cost before any work proceeds.
Engine failure repair — starting prices
Repairs start from the relevant rebuild price for your engine type. The final cost depends on the strip-down assessment and the extent of damage.

Frequently asked questions
How long does an engine failure assessment take?+
The initial diagnostic evaluation can be completed in a few hours. A full strip-down inspection typically takes several hours to a full day, depending on the engine type and complexity. We'll give you a clear timeline when you book in.
Do you charge for the strip-down inspection?+
We charge a diagnostic deposit that covers the strip-down inspection and assessment. This deposit is deducted from the final repair cost if you proceed with the repair. The exact deposit amount depends on the engine type — contact us for details.
Can you repair any BMW engine that has failed?+
We can assess and repair the vast majority of BMW engines, from 4-cylinder diesels to M-division V8s and V10s. In rare cases where an engine is beyond economic repair, we will advise on replacement options instead.
What warranty do you offer on engine failure repairs?+
Every repair we carry out is covered by a 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty. This covers parts and labour for the repaired components. Full warranty terms are provided with every quotation.
Do you provide a courtesy car while my engine is being repaired?+
We don't offer a courtesy car as standard, but we can arrange alternative transport options or recovery assistance. Contact us to discuss your specific needs.
Can you collect my BMW if it has failed and can't be driven?+
Yes. We offer nationwide recovery for failed BMW engines. Collection starts from £70, and we can arrange transport from anywhere in the UK direct to our Billericay workshop.
