What BMW Turbo & Ancillary Repair Involves

Turbocharger failure or degraded performance affects boost, fuel economy, and engine response. Our repair process covers the complete turbo system — we don't just swap the core, we inspect, test, and replace every ancillary component that could cause repeat failure.

  • Turbo access and removal — on BMW's N63/S63 hot-vee engines, turbos sit between cylinder banks, requiring 12–16 hours of skilled labour; other BMW engines place turbos at the side or front, which is significantly faster to access.
  • Full turbo inspection — shaft play, blade damage, oil-seal condition, and wastegate actuator function.
  • Turbo rebuild or replacement — new bearings, seals, and balancing (or a factory-spec replacement unit if the core is beyond repair).
  • Ancillary component replacement — wastegate actuators, oil feed lines, coolant lines, gaskets, and sealing rings — these are replaced as a set to prevent future oil leaks or boost-control issues.
  • Reinstallation, bleeding, and testing — the system is refitted, cooling circuits are bled, and we test for boost leaks, correct wastegate operation, and overall performance on the road.

Our turbo repair process

  1. 01

    Inspection & diagnosis

We assess turbo performance, check for shaft play, oil leaks, and wastegate operation, then confirm the root cause.

  2. 02

    Turbo removal

We access and unbolt the turbo, disconnecting oil and coolant lines. On hot-vee V8s, this is the most labour-intensive stage.

  3. 03

    Rebuild or replacement

We either rebuild the core with new bearings, seals, and balancing, or fit a factory-spec replacement unit.

  4. 04

    Ancillary component replacement

Wastegate actuators, oil feed lines, coolant lines, and all gaskets/seals are replaced as a set.

  5. 05

    Reinstallation & system bleed

The turbo is refitted, all lines reconnected, and cooling systems are bled to remove air.

  6. 06

    Testing & road test

We run leak tests, boost verification, and a full road test to confirm correct operation.

  • Complete ancillary replacement — we replace oil lines, coolant lines, and actuators as a set, so you don't get a repeat failure.
  • 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty — every turbo repair we carry is covered.
  • Nationwide recovery — if your BMW won't make it to us, we can recover it from £70.
  • 3–5 day rebuild turnaround — for most engines, we complete the work quickly without compromising quality.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my BMW turbo is failing?+

Common signs include reduced power, excessive exhaust smoke, a whistling noise from the engine, or the engine management light coming on. We carry out a full inspection to confirm the exact cause.

Can you repair a turbo or does it always need replacing?+

It depends on the condition of the core. We inspect every turbo on removal — if the shaft, bearings, and housing are within spec, we can rebuild it. If the core is damaged, we recommend a replacement unit.

What ancillary components do you replace as part of a turbo repair?+

We replace wastegate actuators, oil feed lines, coolant lines, gaskets, and sealing rings as a complete set. This prevents repeat failures caused by degraded ancillaries.

Why are BMW V8 turbos more expensive to repair?+

On BMW's N63/S63 hot-vee V8 engines, the turbos are mounted between the cylinder banks. Access requires significant disassembly — typically 12–16 hours of labour compared to 4–6 hours on a 4- or 6-cylinder engine.

How long does a BMW turbo repair take?+

Most 4- and 6-cylinder turbo repairs are completed within 2–4 working days. V8 hot-vee repairs take longer due to the access complexity — typically 5–7 days.

What warranty do you offer on turbo repairs?+

All turbo repairs come with a 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty covering parts and labour for the work we carry out.
